As a sustainability intern at OEO Energy Solutions and a member of the Green Fee Team at the University of Memphis, I’ve been diving deep into understanding how LED lighting can transform student life. From academic performance to emotional well-being, this technology offers a lot of potential benefits. To gather some real-world insights, I reached out to several students to hear about their personal experiences. Modern LED lighting systems provide dynamic illumination that can boost cognitive abilities and improve mood, which directly affects how students learn and perform academically.
This blog post shares the firsthand accounts of students who have seen changes in their educational journey due to LED lighting.
Julie Mathis, an accounting major at the University of Memphis, had some interesting things to say about her study environment. She mentioned that she usually studies with a lamp, preferring nighttime sessions. However, without adequate lighting, she finds it challenging to concentrate. She noted that LED lighting in her lamp is just perfect—it’s bright enough to avoid eye strain yet not so harsh that it becomes uncomfortable.
When asked about her academic performance, Julie explained that studying under harsh overhead lighting makes her feel restless and impatient. She doesn’t have specific examples, but she feels her grades suffer in such environments. On the flip side, LED lighting in sports facilities has made her game-day experience more enjoyable. Although the initial brightness can be overwhelming, it helps her stay engaged and focus on the action.
Next up, Morgan Klein, a health sciences student at Ohio State University, shared her thoughts on how LED lighting affects her mood and energy levels. She said cooler, brighter LED lights help her feel more alert and focused, while warmer, dimmer lights create a calming atmosphere. She finds brighter LED lighting particularly useful during study sessions, giving her more energy and enhancing her productivity. Morgan also mentioned that flickering lights used to give her headaches, but high-quality LED lighting has eliminated this issue, allowing her to study more comfortably.
Lastly, Tanaaz Muhayya, a biology major at Stony Brook University, spoke about the positive impacts of improved LED lighting. She noticed a significant increase in her productivity when working on school assignments and household chores. Additionally, LED lighting has brightened her mornings, reducing fatigue and boosting her mood. She feels more accomplished throughout the day when LED lights are present.
Research backs up these personal stories. Studies, like one conducted by the University of Michigan, show that students exposed to bright, natural light score 25% higher on exams than those in dimly lit spaces. LED lighting mimics natural daylight, offering a flicker-free experience that minimizes eye strain and headaches, thereby improving concentration and cognitive function.
Enhancing lighting conditions on campuses nationwide could lead to better academic outcomes and overall student wellness. By sharing these testimonials, I hope to inspire universities to adopt superior LED lighting solutions, creating healthier and more productive learning environments.
If you’ve encountered changes in your student life due to LED lighting, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Share your experiences in the comments or reach out to me directly. Together, let’s work towards a brighter and more sustainable future.

About the Author
My name is Rebekah Moore, and I’m a senior biology major at the University of Memphis. This summer, I’m interning with OEO Energy Solutions, where I’m continuing my work in sustainability initiatives similar to those at my home university, including the Green Fee program. During my internship, I’ve been connecting other U.S. universities with free or low-cost LED lighting upgrades. These upgrades not only improve the student experience but also help commercial and industrial clients access energy-efficient solutions. Through this experience, I’ve gained valuable insights into energy conservation while contributing to broader sustainability efforts.
