This year, the girls decided to celebrate their birthdays with a camping party, but the weather in Britain wasn't exactly cooperating. It rained steadily the entire time, so our plans for a cozy campfire went out the window. Fortunately, we had prepared an alternative: campfire cupcakes topped with marshmallows that looked like they were roasting over flames.
These cupcakes were inspired by a classic campfire s'mores recipe from Betty Crocker. For the base, we used a simple cupcake recipe—four ounces each of butter, caster sugar, and self-raising flour, along with two eggs. To give them a chocolatey twist, we stirred in a generous spoonful of cocoa powder and a touch of orange essence. The frosting was a bright orange buttercream made with food coloring and more orange essence, which we piped onto the cupcakes. Then, we decorated them with twiglets to resemble a campfire.
The most creative part came when we crafted the "flames." We crushed boiled sweets in a freezer bag using a rolling pin and spread the colorful shards on a baking tray. After heating them slightly in the oven, the sweets melted just enough to create realistic-looking flames. Once cooled, we broke them into jagged pieces to mimic the flickering fire.
Adding the finishing touches was the best part. We skewered marshmallows onto cocktail sticks and placed them on top of the cupcakes, giving the impression of marshmallows being toasted over the fire. While the end result looked impressive, it received mixed reactions from our guests. Some loved the marshmallow topping, while others weren’t as enthusiastic. Next time, we’ll make sure to include plain cupcakes alongside these campfire-inspired ones to cater to everyone’s preferences.
Even though the weather didn’t cooperate, it turned out to be a memorable birthday celebration. The effort put into these campfire cupcakes made up for the lack of actual flames, and everyone agreed it was a fun twist on tradition. We even snapped some photos to remember the occasion, capturing the vibrant colors and festive atmosphere. If you’re looking to spice up your next themed party or bake sale, these campfire cupcakes are definitely worth trying—they’re almost too good to eat!
Here are a few more pictures from the day to show off our hard work. Despite the rain, we managed to turn a disappointing situation into something truly special.
