Disposable Piping For Transporting Water – The Packaging Doctor

Disposing of Pipes: The Packaging Doctor's Solution

By Carl Board • Monday May 19, 2014

When people hear "packaging," they often picture those colorful, eye-catching designs found in stores. But the majority of packaging is made for practical purposes, especially in industries like shipping and manufacturing. Durability, strength, and reusability are key concerns for most businesses, but there’s a growing demand for packaging solutions that go beyond these basics.

Environmental sustainability is a major topic in the packaging world. Consumers are increasingly concerned about how packaging impacts the planet, especially since much of it ends up in landfills after just one use. This week, BBC Radio 4 will air an insightful segment on the future of packaging within the business sector during their "In Business" program. You can tune in at 8:30 PM to learn more about what the industry is doing to address these challenges.

But before you listen, here's a story of how I helped a recent client with a unique packaging issue!

Dear Packaging Doctor,

I'm looking for a disposable pipe. Let me explain: I need something that can be temporarily connected to a nuclear power plant to transport water to another building. Recently, we constructed a new building nearby, but it doesn't have a water supply yet. For now, we need a solution that can move water from the main source to the new building without too much pressure. A regular hose is too strong for this task—water just needs to flow smoothly. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks, Gary

Hello Gary,

This is definitely an interesting request! Moving water around can be tricky because leaks are always a concern—this is why our team developed leak-proof boxes for certain clients. Since you're looking for something that resembles a pipe, I'd recommend using lay-flat tubing, specifically the heavy-duty version. It's made from 250-micron-thick polythene, which is extremely durable and comes in various widths to fit your specific needs. It's open-ended, making it easy to adapt into a pipe-like structure, and can also be sealed if required. I assure you, this material won't let you down—it's abrasion-resistant and far more resilient than standard polythene, making it ideal for outdoor use.

Let me know how things progress with your project.

Best wishes,

The Packaging Doctor
