How to Package Ice Cream Cone Cakes and Tall Cakes – The Packaging Doctor
The Surgery Is Now Open

Hello Doctor,
I recently started a cake business specializing in ice cream cone cakes. These cakes are essentially baked inside ice cream cones and decorated to resemble classic Mr. Whippy-style treats. They’re quite popular, but their tall, conical shape has been a challenge when it comes to packaging. Do you have any creative solutions for me?
Thank you so much in advance!
Best regards,
Shirley
Hi Shirley,
I must admit, your ice cream cone cakes look absolutely mouthwatering! I can definitely understand why you’d be concerned about packaging such delicate creations. One idea could be using wine bottle boxes. While these might not perfectly match the exact height of your cakes, they can still work well if adapted slightly. You could modify the internal dividers by cutting them in half and adding extra cardboard layers to create snug fits for each cake.
This approach offers several advantages. First, the reinforced construction of the bottle boxes ensures stability—your cakes won’t topple over or bump into one another during transport. Second, the durable materials used in these boxes provide excellent protection against damage, making them ideal for long-distance deliveries. If you need something even sturdier, custom-made packaging tailored specifically for your unique cakes might be worth exploring further down the line.
In the meantime, experimenting with the bottle box method should give you solid results without breaking the bank. Let me know how things go once you try it out!
Warm regards,
