Exposure to chemicals can lead to discoloration, softening, cracking, or degradation of plastic materials. Once a plastic begins to soften and swell, its weight increases while its tensile strength decreases. Cracking or fissuring further reduces the material’s elongation properties. Crystalline polymers typically exhibit lower viscosity and better flowability compared to amorphous polymers, which tend to be more viscous and less chemically resistant. As a result, components made from crystalline resins often have lower stress resistance but higher chemical resistance. Due to their excellent chemical resistance, plastics like polypropylene are increasingly used as cost-effective alternatives to stainless steel in dishwasher interiors. Although polypropylene has one of the best chemical resistance levels among all plastics, it is still crucial to develop reliable testing methods to evaluate its long-term stability under harsh conditions.
Without an appropriate and stable testing system, polypropylene may degrade over time, especially in the extreme environment of a dishwasher drum. Test results show that unstable materials tend to discolor quickly. While this discoloration doesn’t necessarily impact the mechanical properties of the material, it is visually unappealing and can negatively affect the product’s appearance. Therefore, ensuring visual consistency is just as important as maintaining structural integrity.
Given the need to develop a new dishwasher inner bucket as quickly as possible, a dynamic computer simulation program was employed to model the drop test—similar to how car manufacturers simulate crash tests. The software used, LS-DYNA (456×789), is a general-purpose explicit finite element analysis tool capable of simulating nonlinear dynamic responses in structures and mechanical parts. By leveraging these simulations, we were able to directly design the inner tub without the need for physical prototypes, significantly reducing both development time and costs.
In addition, when engineering polymers are applied to different structures, it's essential to understand how strain rate and temperature affect the material’s deformation behavior. This data helps ensure that the chosen polymer performs reliably under real-world conditions.
