The potential of the printed electronics market in 2010 is huge

Printed electronics (PE) is a sunrise industry in the printing industry. It has made significant progress in recent years, but there are still some unresolved issues in the production of printed products.

With the arrival of the new year, it is necessary to sort out the current status of the printed electronics market and find the right direction for it.

In general, the printed electronics market can be divided into the following areas: photovoltaics, batteries and sensors, displays and lighting, and RFID. Some areas—RFID, lighting, and photovoltaics—have achieved overall growth and brought valuable opportunities to the printing industry, and other areas, including displays and batteries, are now ready to take off!

The strong field of printed electronics

So far, the display may be an area for many opportunities for printing electronics. The market potential of e-readers is not to be underestimated. There are currently more than 25 e-reader products in the market. Many of these products use technology from Einck, whose Vizplex technology is used in many popular e-reader products such as Amazon Kindle and Sony.

EInk participated in a major M&A transaction in the industry in 2009. It was acquired by Taiwan's PrimeView International (PVI) for $215 million, which has become the world's largest manufacturer of electronic paper modules.

Two other companies active in the e-reader market are also planning to have some new moves in 2010 and will showcase their fist products at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Liquavista, which was split from the Philips Research Laboratory, will use electrowetting on its own e-readers, and the company stands out in the European Entrepreneurship Competition, where nearly 400 technology companies compete. Won the title of technology company.

Color is an important factor in the success of e-readers in the future, and it is also a major obstacle that companies need to overcome. In early 2010, Liquavista launched a new technology platform, LiquavistaColor, and brought color display capabilities to the field of e-readers.

Another company that injects fresh blood into the e-reader market is PlasticLogic, which has developed an e-reader for business use, Que. With Que, users can not only read books and newspapers, but also work with software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. In addition, Que can also interoperate with the BlackBerry.

There are many companies that want to do a bit of work in the display market, and companies such as eMagin, KentDisplays, MFLEX, Novaled, Sumation, and UniversalDisplays are looking forward to 2010.

In the field of lighting, LED and OLED lighting technologies have made great progress, and well-known lighting manufacturers such as General Electric, Philips and Osram have also attached great importance to the development of these technologies. Although the lighting products produced by printing have not yet been commercially applied, in the near future, printed electronics will certainly make breakthroughs in the OLED market.

Batteries and sensors are also an area in which printed electronics has long been successful. Companies such as BlueSparkTechnologies, Cymbet, Enfucell and PowerPaper have made remarkable achievements in the field of printed batteries. With the widespread use of RFID tags, relying on and smart packaging, printing companies will also win more market opportunities.

At the same time, printed electronics will become the mainstream production method in some markets, but its technology still needs further improvement. It is understood that photovoltaic and RFID will bring significant development opportunities to the printing industry. Photovoltaic is evolved from traditional rigid solar cells and is currently an effective way to collect solar energy. But rigid batteries don't have the flexibility needed for chargers or photovoltaic building integration, so some companies have developed a range of thin film flexible solar cells with different materials, but these technologies are currently in efficiency, especially outside the laboratory. Production and other aspects still need improvement.

Printing is a costly way to produce solar cells, and three companies – Heliovolt, Konarka and Nanosolar – are using the technology to produce batteries.

It is worth noting that Nanosolar opened two mass production plants in San Jose, Calif., and Luckenwalde, Germany, last year. According to the company, these plants have already automated production and produced a panel every 10 seconds. And at full capacity, these plants produce 640 MW of batteries per year.

In addition, RFID is also a market to be printed for electronic development. The ability to print RFID tags and low cost (the ultimate goal is 1 cent per piece) is the two main reasons driving the market to thrive. Companies such as Kovio and PolyICGmbH are currently experiencing rapid growth in the field of printed electronics.

Looking forward to 2010, printed electronics will achieve faster and better development, and companies, universities, print electronics developers and manufacturers will also contribute a series of new applications.
