Use of acetylene busbars and pipe assembly

The Use of Acetylene Busbars and Pipe Assembly

Before assembling the acetylene busbar and pipeline system, it is essential to thoroughly clean and de-rust all components. The pipes must be free from burrs, rust spots, and scale. After cleaning, the outer surface of the pipes should be coated with red lead primer followed by a layer of yellow alkyd paint for protection. Once the piping is connected, a hydrostatic pressure test at 8 to 10 atmospheres should be conducted to check for weld integrity and joint leaks. This is followed by a gas tightness test under the same pressure to ensure no air leakage occurs. A static grounding device must also be installed on both the busbars and the acetylene piping to prevent static electricity buildup, which could pose a serious fire or explosion risk. Before commissioning the pipeline, nitrogen should be used to purge the air out of the system. Special attention should be given to ensuring that air does not accumulate in any part of the pipeline, especially at the end. A small vent hole can be installed at the end to release any trapped air. Once the pipeline is fully filled with nitrogen, this vent is sealed with a wire plug. Only then should acetylene gas be introduced into the system for use.

In industrial settings, acetylene is widely used in applications such as cutting torches, welding equipment, and heat treatment processes. Due to its high flammability and explosive nature, handling acetylene requires strict safety measures. By using an acetylene busbar system, gas distribution becomes more efficient, allowing for stable pressure and flow rates, which improves overall gas quality. Additionally, this centralized approach reduces the need for storing multiple acetylene cylinders, thereby minimizing the environmental impact caused by carbide slag accumulation and improving plant cleanliness. It also eliminates the need for frequent transportation and storage of calcium carbide, leading to cost savings and greater operational efficiency. The use of acetylene busbars not only enhances safety but also makes it easier to monitor and manage gas flow, reducing the risk of leaks or accidental loss of gas bottles. This system plays a crucial role in preventing fire and explosion hazards, making it a smart and safe choice for industrial acetylene usage.
