How to Safely Ship Delicate Food Items Overseas – A Guide from The Packaging Doctor
The Packaging Clinic is Now Open

Hello Marmite Messenger,
We frequently receive inquiries about shipping delicate food items like Marmite, which is such a quintessential part of British culture. Sending care packages to loved ones overseas is a wonderful gesture, helping them feel connected to home even when they’re far away.
Marmite jars pose unique challenges due to their odd shape, heavy glass, and fragile plastic lids. To start, I’d recommend securing the lid tightly with stretch wrap, particularly the mini variety (which is 100mm wide) as it sticks to itself and keeps the lid snug while protecting the contents from moisture damage. Adding an extra layer of bubble wrap, especially the small-bubble type, is ideal for absorbing shocks during transit. Alternatively, quilted air cushions made using the Kite Mini Air machine could be a simpler solution for wrapping jars, thanks to their perforated edges that allow easy tearing.
Finally, ensure the package is placed in a double-walled box. This adds an additional layer of protection against bumps and scratches. For a standard-sized Marmite jar, a box measuring 10 x 10 x 10 inches should suffice.
I’m confident your brother will love receiving his favorite spread from back home!
Best wishes,
The Packaging Doctor
