The wind direction unit consists of a wind vane and a magnetic compass dial. The direction is determined by the position of the vane on the dial. The wind speed section uses a traditional three-cup rotating frame design. A microcontroller inside the device samples and calculates the frequency output from the wind sensor. It then displays real-time wind speed, one-minute average wind speed, instantaneous wind force, one-minute average wind force, and average wind speed along with corresponding wave height on an LCD screen.
The wind speed sensor employs a three-cup assembly made of carbon fiber cups and a cup holder. The converter includes a multi-tooth rotor and optical coupler. As the cups rotate with the wind, the shaft rotates within the slotted optocoupler, generating a frequency signal. For wind direction, the sensor uses a code wheel and photoelectric components. When the vane turns, it drives the code disc, producing a Gray code output. Alternatively, a precision conductive plastic potentiometer can be used to generate a variable voltage signal based on the vane’s position.
