"Redwood" is classified as a type of "hardwood"
The national standard "Redwood" (GB/T 18107-2000) identified 33 species of redwood. In 2008, the industry standard "Dark and Expensive Hardwood Furniture" was introduced, which listed a total of 101 hardwood species, including the 33 redwood species from the national standard. On August 1 this year, a new standard for mahogany furniture, "General Technical Conditions for Redwood Furniture" (GB 28010-2011), was issued. This is China's first mandatory standard specifically for redwood furniture. This indicates that the 33 redwood species defined in the national standard are included within the 101 hardwood species outlined in the "Dark and Expensive Hardwood Furniture" standard.
"Hardwood" does not necessarily mean "Redwood"
Experts in the redwood industry remind consumers that even if the furniture they purchase meets the industry standard for "Dark and Expensive Hardwood Furniture," it only means the material falls within the 101 species defined by that standard. It doesn't necessarily mean the wood belongs to the 33 redwood species. In other words, buying expensive hardwood furniture does not automatically mean you're purchasing redwood furniture. The "Dark and Expensive Hardwood Furniture" industry standard is not a revision or expansion of the "Redwood" national standard. Their scopes differ, and they should not be confused. Additionally, the newly issued "General Technical Conditions for Redwood Furniture" is an independent standard with specific mandatory requirements for redwood furniture, not a modification or update of the "Redwood" standard. Therefore, when purchasing redwood furniture, it's important to understand these three standards and remain cautious to avoid being misled.
In summary, the "Dark and Expensive Hardwood Furniture" standard lists 101 types of dark and valuable hardwoods, including all 33 species recognized under the "Redwood" national standard (GB/T 18107-2000). The remaining 68 species are also considered dark and valuable hardwoods but are not part of the "Redwood" standard. These 33 redwood species are rare and highly valued within the broader category of dark and precious hardwoods, meeting both standards. However, the other 68 species meet the criteria for "dark and expensive hardwood" but do not qualify as redwood under the national standard. Be wary of merchants who falsely claim ordinary hardwoods are redwood.
In the market, some furniture is made from woods that belong to the 101 types of dark and expensive hardwoods, such as Guibourtia and Swartizia, which have attractive grain patterns, colors, and materials. Some merchants mislead customers by calling these woods "Brazilian Rosewood" or "Red Sandalwood." Although these woods may look similar to real rosewood or red sandalwood, they are not among the 33 redwood species. They should be clearly labeled with their correct names to avoid consumer confusion. These two types of wood have only been imported from Africa and Latin America in recent years and were not used in furniture during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Additionally, in today’s market, woods like Dialium, Afzelia, Intsia, Pericopsis, and Rengas, as well as some imported Melanorrhoea species, are commonly used in furniture and flooring. All of them fall under the 101 types of dark and valuable hardwoods and can easily be mistaken for redwood. Consumers are encouraged to enhance their ability to distinguish genuine redwood from imitations.
