3D Print Heart Rate Alarm: Patient's "bodyguard"

In recent years, 3D bio-printing has emerged as a powerful tool in the medical field. One remarkable success story highlights how mature and advanced 3D printing technology has become. It not only showcases the potential of this innovation but also motivates more creators to use 3D printers to bring hope and solutions to patients in need. Frank Nguyen, now 17 years old, has been deeply concerned about his mother’s health since sixth grade. Over time, he watched helplessly as his mother, Lan Nguyen, gradually lost vision in one eye and experienced declining vision in the other. She also started facing hearing issues, and her condition worsened further with heart problems like dizziness, thyroid issues, and irregular heart rates. “My mom got really sick,” Nguyen shared. “I was scared she might have an emergency, and I didn’t know how to handle it.” However, during a summer program at Ryerson University, Nguyen found a breakthrough. He eventually designed and 3D printed a prototype for a heart rate alarm monitoring device. His goal was not only to support his mother but also to help Others facing similar health challenges worldwide. The current version of the device is somewhat large and bulky, but it's packed with features. It can be worn on the wrist and uses a light and sensor to monitor the user’s heart rate. If a heart attack is detected, the device automatically sends a text message to a caregiver or emergency responder. Nguyen’s prototype is entirely 3D printed and includes two microcontrollers, an 8GB storage unit, and a short message service system. It uses cellular networks and GPS functions, all powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. When the user wears the device, a small green light flashes below it. This light reflects onto a sensor on the wristband, allowing a special algorithm to calculate the heart rate based on voltage changes. The device stores heartbeat data over time, and the information can be accessed via a built-in memory card. Additionally, the device can even call 911 through a virtual network. When the monitor detects abnormal heart rates, it automatically sends a text message with critical details such as the patient’s age, medical history, and location—ensuring that emergency responders are fully informed in real time.
