Lime, fly ash and gravel mixture rolling method for survival and conservation

I. Rolling Method for Lime, Fly Ash, and Gravel Mixture

The maximum compaction thickness for lime, fly ash, and gravel mix is 20 cm. Once the mixture is laid, it should be rolled immediately to ensure proper density. Before starting the rolling process, double-check the thickness and elevation of the paved layer to avoid any inconsistencies. The rolling should begin from the lowest point and move upward, ensuring even pressure. After the first pass, stop the roller to inspect and repair any irregularities. During paving, you may encounter areas that are too dense or too loose. When unevenness is detected, address low spots by adding more aggregate mixture, while high spots should be carefully excavated and filled with surrounding material using a shovel—never remove part of the aggregate directly. After repairs, continue rolling until the required density is achieved. Do not attempt to compensate by simply throwing sand on the surface. The final rolled surface should have a rough texture with visible coarse aggregates exposed.

Throughout the entire rolling process, ensure there is no water accumulation on the surface to prevent sticking or squeezing. If the mixture becomes sticky or starts to grind, remove the affected areas promptly. Additionally, conduct a thorough inspection of the site for any signs of damage, such as uneven elastic surfaces or transverse cracks along the direction of the rolling wheel. If any issues are found, excavate the affected area completely and replace it with fresh material. This ensures long-term stability and performance of the base layer.

When working in segments, leave a 30–50 cm section unrolled at the joint. When the second stage of paving begins, the un-compacted area should be planed and mixed with the existing material. Add a small amount of water, smooth the surface, and then roll the entire area with the full roller. After rolling, check for any remaining unevenness and perform a final trimming if needed.

2. How to Maintain the Lime, Fly Ash, and Gravel Base After Compaction

After compaction, the lime, fly ash, and gravel base is not yet fully stabilized, so timely maintenance is essential. The primary method of maintenance is watering the compacted surface. You can use either a spray system or manual sprinkling, but the key is to keep the surface consistently moist after compaction. Avoid damaging the surface during this process. The maintenance period should last at least 6 days after the rolling is completed. If an asphalt emulsion is applied on top of the base, it should be sprayed immediately, and the surface can be cured without additional watering. During the entire curing period, avoid any mechanical traffic or excavation activities to prevent damage to the newly compacted base.
