Lime, fly ash and gravel mixture rolling method for survival and conservation

I. Rolling Method for Lime, Fly Ash, and Gravel Mixture

The compacted layer thickness of the lime, fly ash, and gravel mixture can reach up to 20 cm. As soon as the mixture is laid, it should be rolled immediately. Before starting the rolling process, it's essential to double-check the thickness and actual elevation of the laid material. Rolling should always begin from the lower areas and move towards higher ground, ensuring even compaction. After the initial rolling, if any unevenness is detected, such as dense or loose spots, the area should be repaired before continuing. For low spots, additional aggregate mixture should be added to fill the gap. For high spots, the excess material should be carefully removed by digging out the area, and then the surrounding mix should be spread using a shovel. Directly removing part of the aggregate with a shovel is not recommended. Once the repair is done, rolling should continue until the required density is achieved. It’s important to avoid making up for missed areas by throwing sand or other materials onto the surface. The final rolled surface should have a rough texture with visible coarse aggregates on top. Throughout the entire rolling process, care must be taken to prevent water accumulation on the surface, which can cause sticking or squeezing. If the mixture becomes sticky or starts to grind, it should be promptly removed. Additionally, the entire site should be inspected for signs of damage, such as uneven elastic surfaces or transverse cracks caused by the roller. Any problematic areas should be addressed immediately by completely excavating the affected section and replacing it with fresh material. In cases of segmented work, the joint area may remain unrolled for about 30–50 cm. When the second stage of paving begins, this unrolled section will be prepared by cutting and mixing the old and new materials. A small amount of water can be sprinkled on the ground, followed by smoothing and compaction using the full roller. After the compaction is complete, the surface should be checked again for any unevenness, and further trimming should be done if necessary.

2. How to Maintain the Lime, Fly Ash, and Gravel Base After Compaction

After the lime, fly ash, and gravel base has been compacted, maintenance is crucial to ensure proper curing and long-term stability. The primary method involves watering the compacted surface. This can be done by spraying water or using a garden hose. Regardless of the method used, the surface of the mixture must remain consistently moist after compaction to support the chemical reactions that strengthen the base. It’s important to avoid damaging the surface during the watering process. The maintenance period should last at least 6 days after the rolling is completed. If an asphalt emulsion is applied on top of the base, it should be sprayed promptly, and in such cases, watering may not be necessary, as the emulsion itself helps in curing. During the entire maintenance phase, no mechanical vehicles or heavy equipment should be allowed to travel over the surface, nor should any slotting or excavation activities take place. These precautions are essential to protect the integrity of the base and ensure it reaches its full strength.
