Singapore-China scientists collaborate to develop new dengue fever vaccine

International online feature: According to Xinhua News Agency, Singapore Science and Technology Research Bureau Singapore and Chinese scientists have jointly developed a new vaccine against dengue fever. If the clinical trial is successful, it will be the first vaccine that can simultaneously prevent all four common subtypes of dengue fever.

According to the Singapore Science and Technology Research Bureau, researchers have used new strategies to weaken the dengue virus's ability to evade the host's immune system. The weakened dengue virus is expected to become a safe and effective vaccine. Animal experiments have confirmed that the dengue virus weakened by genetic modification can make the animal gain resistance from the normal dengue virus.

This research was carried out in collaboration with the Singapore Immunology Group under the Singapore Science and Technology Research Council, the Novartis Institute of Tropical Diseases in Singapore and the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology of the Chinese Academy of Military Medical Sciences. The research team's next plan is to study the vaccine formulation to prevent four subtypes of dengue fever with a single injection. If this strategy is verified in humans, it will be a major breakthrough in the field of dengue vaccines.
