Full 3D printed stainless steel cafe Cucuyo on the side of Biscayne Bay welcomes guests

Visitors to the Miami Perez Art Museum (PAMM) can now order coffee and lunch from a real 3D printing cafe. This new coffee shop on the Miami waterfront is called Cucuyo.

Cucuyo was designed by the South Florida construction company Berenblum Busch Architecture (BBA) and printed by Amsterdam design company MX3D 3D. It resembles a futuristic stainless steel silkworm cocoon, fully 3D printed and weighs 700 pounds. Its design and name are inspired by the childhood experience of capturing fireflies at night (Cucuyo means fireflies in Spanish).

This 3D printing café is fully equipped and will be managed by Starr Restaurant Group, headed by Chef Kaytlin Dangaran. Cucuyo is a perfect blend of art and lunch, and its impressive and complex structure is a work of art for its customers.

It is worth mentioning that the cafe can be dismantled into several smaller sections to allow for migration when needed. The MX3D played a key role in the construction of the café. It is a Dutch company known for its 3D printed bridge project. To build Cucuyo, the MX3D team used its own industrial 3D printing robot to build this amazing building a little bit.

MX3D explains: “The open shell-like outer structure consists of complex thin beams that enclose the interior structure of the café, while providing protection while allowing the breeze from Biscayne Bay to flow in.” In order to maintain the fluidity of the structure, It is printed in 3D into three main sections: the front desk, the back cabinet and the door. When fully assembled, the café is 20x12x9 feet (length x width x height).

The café was opened yesterday to provide customers with coffee, sandwiches and other snacks.
