Harbin Fifth Hospital 3D printing technology helps children with surgical treatment

The reporter learned from the Fifth Hospital of Harbin that recently, the clinical application of 3D printing technology in the treatment of developmental hip dislocation in children was studied by the hospital's pediatric orthopaedic physician Tang Chi, chief physician Zhao Ning and others. The application has been successful.

According to reports, developmental hip dislocation is a more common congenital malformation. The femoral head loses its normal relationship with the acetabulum in the joint capsule, so that it can not develop normally before and after birth. Its early diagnosis and treatment is still a topic that has yet to be completely solved. In the past, conventional surgical treatment was performed by first performing x-ray and CT examinations, and then measuring the dislocation height from x-ray and CT slices. Finally, the corresponding surgical methods, osteotomy angle and osteotomy amount were determined. Due to the one-sidedness and limitation of x-ray and CT, the measured data is indirect data, and there is an error in the actual data of the lesion. In the operation, it is necessary to adjust according to the actual situation, thereby increasing the difficulty of surgery. After the advent of 3D printing technology, the diagnosis of bone diseases can give a relatively intuitive data, and can provide a more intuitive physical model, which provides a powerful basis for the choice of pathological changes and accurate data selection.

Beginning in February 2014, the hospital applied 3D printing technology to the diagnosis and treatment of developmental dislocation of the hip in children. The CT data were used to establish a 1:1 solid model for simulating pediatric hip dislocation, and the actual model was measured before surgery. Simulated surgical osteotomy and selection of appropriate internal fixation, intraoperative can be more accurate osteotomy, correction and more appropriate internal fixation. The successful application of this technology will further advance the treatment of developmental hip dislocation in children in the direction of digitization, precision and individualization.
