New technology allows the paper industry to say goodbye to "black liquor"

The traditional method of extracting fiber from plants for papermaking typically relies on the "acid-base method," which generates a significant amount of alkaline "black liquor." This byproduct poses a serious threat to the environment due to its high pollution levels. However, a breakthrough has recently been made by the Beijing Menghu Yutong Bamboo Fiber Center. They have developed a revolutionary technology called "Green Energy Biomass Organic Components Separation and Extraction." This innovation has successfully passed an appraisal meeting organized by the China High-tech Industrialization Research Association. Ding Fuchen, chairman of the appraisal committee and a professor at the Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology, praised the process as "zero pollution, zero emissions" with a high utilization rate. He emphasized that the technology is internationally advanced in terms of comprehensive performance. This new technology was designed to address two major issues: the low strength of bamboo fiber and the heavy environmental pollution caused during the extraction process. Unlike conventional methods, it does not use water and instead employs a mixed catalytic solvent. The entire separation process takes only 30 minutes to 2 hours, making it highly efficient for separating all types of woody and herbaceous biomass. According to Ding Fuchen, the newly developed composite organic solvent system, along with the advanced process technology, can effectively separate and extract cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from biomass. It offers a high raw material utilization rate, recyclable solvents, low water consumption, and minimal energy use. Most importantly, the production process is environmentally friendly, producing no waste liquid, waste gas, or solid waste. It also requires lower equipment investment and results in high-yield, high-purity products that meet industry standards. Zhang Ziyu, from the Beijing Menghu Yutong Bamboo Fiber Research and Development Center, highlighted the potential of this new technology. By using the innovative method to extract high-purity lignin, the physical properties of the material remain intact. This opens up opportunities for developing a wide range of high-tech products, including applications in aerospace, military, solar energy, and microelectronics. Lignin can also serve as a renewable biomass resource and energy source. Meanwhile, the extracted cellulose can be used in textiles, pulp, and construction materials, while hemicellulose (poly pentose) plays a crucial role in medicine, food, and chemical industries. With this groundbreaking technology, the future of sustainable fiber extraction looks promising, offering a cleaner, more efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional methods.
